Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2009, there are 84.47 millions of card payment transactions in Greece(7.49 transactions per capita), a marginal decrease of 0.87 millions or 1.02% compares to 85.34 millions in 2008. Majority of these transactions, 73.27 millions or 86.74% is paid by credit cards, a decrease of 1.99 millions or 2.64% compares to 75.26 millions in 2008; a small setback considering the decrease of 11.11% in the number of credit cards issued in 2009. The rest of card payment transactions(11.2 millions) are paid by debit cards, a significant increase of 1.12 millions or 11.11% compares to 10.08 millions in 2008; which is inline with increase in the number of debit cards in 2009. Greece total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.27% to the EU total number of transactions.

Greece has a low total card payments in value in Europe, there is a decrease of €0.58 billions or 6.38% to €8.51 billions(€0.75 thousands per capita) in 2009, compares to €9.09 in 2008. This translates into €100.8 per card payment transaction, a decrease compares to €106.5 in 2008. This figure also meant payment cards are used only for large amount purchases in Greece. Greece has the highest average value per card payment transaction in Europe, followed by Cyprus(€87.4) and Italy with €80.4 Out of these transactions, €7.12 billions or 83.67% is paid by credit cards, a decrease of €0.61 billions or 7.89% compares to €7.73 billions in 2008. This is influence by increase on the number of credit cards issued. The rest of card payments, €1.39 billions in value is paid by debit cards, an increase of €0.03 billions or 2.16% compares to €1.36 billions in 2008. This is in accordance with the increase in debit cards number of transactions. Greece total card payment value contributes a mere 0.52% to the EU total transactions value.


Credit cards in Greece 2007-2008

As of 2008, Greece has a population of 11.24 millions with a GDP(gross domestic product) of €236.92 billions. This translates into €21.08 thousands of GDP per capita. Greece contributes 1.90% of the EU total GDP.

As at 31st December 2008, there are 15,074,510 payment cards issued in Greece(1.33 cards per capita), an increase of 655,390 or 4.55% compares to 14,419,120 in 2007. There are 6,914,130 credit cards in Greece as at 31st December 2008, an increase of 206,820 or 3.08% compares to 6,707,310 in 2007. Debit cards increase by 448,570 or 5.82% to 8,160,380 in 2008, compares to 7,711,810 in 2007.

For 2008, there are 85.34 millions of card payment transactions in Greece(7.59 transactions per capita), an increase of 7.8 millions or 10.06% compares to 77.54 millions in 2007. Majority of these transactions, 75.26 millions or 88.19% is paid by credit cards, an increase of 5.98 millions or 8.63% compares to 69.28 millions in 2007; which is inline with increase in number of credit cards issued in 2008. The rest of card payment transactions(10.08 millions) are paid by debit cards, a significant increase of 1.82 millions or 22.03% compares to 8.26 millions in 2007. Greece total card payment transactions volume contributes a low 0.29% to the EU total number of transactions.

Greece has a low total card payments in value in Europe, there is an increase of €0.54 billions or 6.32% to €9.09 billions(€0.81 thousands per capita) in 2008, compares to €8.55 in 2007. This translates into €106.5 per card payment transaction, a slight decrease compares to €110.3 in 2007. This figure also meant payment cards are used only for large amount purchases in Greece. Greece has the highest average value per card payment transaction in Europe, followed by Cyprus(€92.8) and Italy with €83.6 Out of these transactions, €7.73 billions or 85.04% is paid by credit cards, an increase of €0.38 billions or 5.17% compares to €7.35 billions in 2007. This is influence by increase on the number of credit cards issued. The rest of card payments, €1.36 billions in value is paid by debit cards, an increase of €0.16 billions or 13.33% compares to €1.2 billions in 2007. This is in accordance with the increase in debit cards number of transactions. Greece total card payment value contributes a mere 0.55% to the EU total transactions value.
